Teach at a primary school

To improve your practical knowledge in a school, it is possible to do a traineeship in a Tanzanian school. Volunteers are important for schools as they are a valuable help and support for teachers and students. By bringing them into the classroom, you can collect important skills and experience in the field of teaching and leadership and, in a certain sense, you can help develop the students further and prepare them for life, because they know that “education is the key to life”.

Usa River Primary School is a public elementary school with approximately 1,258 students ages 6-14 who are divided into 12 classrooms. This includes 26 teachers. The problem here is that there are about 120 students in a classroom. As a result, the teachers urgently need your help in teaching. he school have enough land to plant trees, build more classes and introduce sports and games as the headteacher wish. They need many fruit trees to be planted if you’d like to be involved please help them! Furthermore, 248 children are orphans and would be happy to receive support during their school days.

Working hours:

  • Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Breakfast break from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

  • Lunch break from 12:30 p.m. to 1:10 p.m.

Note:

  • English and math teachers are most needed

  • Physical education teachers and coaches are needed to give students an opportunity to learn a new sport and acquire skills, and this is also approved by the government. Through good athletic performance, the students have a chance of employment and also to compete against other school teams in competitions.

  • If you are not a teacher or a trainee in the teaching profession and you would like to work at a school, this is still possible. Your help is needed with gardening projects, in the kitchen, and with sports activities. You can offer your own physical education classes and help children of all ages to motivate them and impart other necessary school-relevant skills.

Special Notice:

In Tanzania schools, it is required to be smartly dressed as a teacher. This means that women should wear at least knee-length skirts/dresses; pants are not appreciated. Men should wear long pants (suit pants) with a suit shirt. We at Africa Heart's Desire hope that by following these simple rules, you will treat the locals with the respect they deserve.
