Caring for abandoned babies

Nkoaranga Orphanage/Baby Home is an interim care facility, a safe place of love, that babies in need find a place of loving refuge before they are reunited with extended family or adopted. Unlike many other orphanages that care for children until they become adults, Nkoaranga baby home is a temporary care for vulnerable babies. It provides love, nutritious food, medical care, and a much needed safety net for babies. There are an estimated over 1.3 million orphans in the country, most of them are living with extended family members because the children are older and can eat solid foods, but these little babies are not able to eat solid foods and require special baby formula as well as intimate and constant care. They need special care, the personal touch that only a place like Nkoaranga Orphanage/Baby Home can offer.

Nkoaranga Orphanage began taking babies in 1890´s under establishment of Germany missionaries. Later the need of small dispensary arise which is today the Nkoaranga Hospital, the patron of Nkoaranga Orphanage/Baby Home. In 1997 a German organization called Mama Ursula supported the reconstruction of the orphanage on its current location though the old building still exist for other use.

Nkoaranga Orphanage/Baby Home is operating 24 hours. 3 shifts saves with 12 caregiving Mamas, who split to provide loving residence to the children on need. Your loving hands and heart to help as a volunteer to take care the average of 30 babies and toddlers is needed of (0-4 years). The Baby home makes sure, that the children are adopted before the age of four, so that they can grow up in a family environment. The family reunification and preservation is one of the main goals of the orphanage.

First shift start from 8 am but for volunteers you can arrange your working schedule. Babies and children take nap everyday from 12:30 to 14 o’clock then you also have the possibility for lunch where you might walk to Nkoaranga hospital cafeteria. You can also help on weekend and night shifts.

Important information about the Nkoaranga orphanage/baby home.

Most NGOs cannot afford to cover the daily running costs despite the good will of their organization and therefore the management of Nkoaranga Orphanage requires each volunteer to pay a fee of 200 USD PER MONTH (it is also possible to pay 50 USD PER WEEK) which is used to pay bills and most importantly to ensure that the 12 mamas/nannies who work there are always paid a salary as they ensure that the babies are in safe hands all year round even when there is no volunteer.

Note: This fee is paid directly to the hospital's accountant on your first day.
